A COMPREHENSIVE ARTICLE INDEX TO PANZER LEADER
by
Alan R. Arvold
The following is an article index to every known article and
variant having to do with the game PANZER LEADER. It is based on
the author's vast collection of articles to that game. It is
estimated that over 95% of all PANZER LEADER articles are in this
collection. The author also has knowledge of other articles that
are not in his collection but knows enough information about them
to list them here in this index.
The index will be divided up by magazine and/or company title.
Each entry will have the magazine issue number, title, author's
name, and a short description of the article or variant contents.
Note that in many cases not all entries will have all of this
information present. This is due to the author not having a copy
of the article or variant in question. Also note that this index
will include articles that PANZER LEADER shares with its sister
game PANZERBLITZ.
This index will be an ongoing work. As more old articles and
variants become available to the author and new ones get
published, they will added to this list.

BOARDGAMER Magazine
The BOARDGAMER was an independently published magazine by its
owner (and editor) Bruce Monnin. After the demise of the GENERAL,
the BOARDGAMER became heir to the GENERAL's readership. Like the
GENERAL, it published articles on Avalon Hill and Victory Games
games and towards the end, expanded its article coverage to all
games played at the World Boardgame Championships. Since the
publication of its special PANZER LEADER issue, the BOARDGAMER
became the home to the game. It should be noted that although the
magazine gave PANZER LEADER (along with PANZERBLITZ) an equal
share of space as it would any other game, it was NOT devoted to
PANZER LEADER (and PANZERBLITZ) to the exclusion of all others.
That it appeared to be devoted to the game in the final years was
only because many of the article submissions had been of the
PANZERBLITZ/PANZER LEADER variety. The BOARDGAMER put out its
last issue in September 2004 and then folded, due to the
Machiavellian machinations of Multi-Man Publishing, a company
that seems bent on sweeping away all vestiges of the old classic
PANZERBLITZ and PANZER LEADER to make way for the new version
that they are working on.
Vol.1, #1 - Panzer Leader - Avaloncon Scenarios From the 1994 and
1995 Tournaments (Bill Scott) - An article showing

and Micheal P. Flagiello) - An article introducing
the Jumbo Sherman tank into PANZER LEADER. Includes
rules for its use and seven new scenarios.
Of course this section on the BOARDGAMER would not be complete
unless I added the article index to the Special PANZER LEADER
issue. Here it is:

the years. This list was used in this article in the GENERAL
section above.

corrections to previously published scenarios.
References from the Boardgamer (Bruce C. Monnin) - A list of
PANZER LEADER articles in the BOARDGAMER.

the Normandy Campaign in 1944. Translated from original Italian
article with the same scenarios.

counters for the game. They were printed on the inside of the

OLD SOLDIERS Magazine
OLD SOLDIERS magazine is an E-mag published by Tom Cundiff. It
started in September 2004 as a replacement for the outgoing
BOARDGAMER magazine. It publishes articles on old out-of-print
games and some brand new games as well. While the editor has a
large reserve of PANZERBLITZ/PANZER LEADER articles, he only
publishes them sparingly as he wants this electronic magazine to
be for all games, not just for PANZERBLITZ and PANZER LEADER.
Volume 1, #2 - Panzer Leader in Poland: 10 Scenarios From the
Polish Campaign (Gilbert Garza) - This article
presented the Polish Campaign in 1939 in ten
scenarios using the PANZER LEADER game. The
article includes the ten scenarios, two counter
sheets, and Unit Function Charts for the various
new counters.
Volume 1, #2 - "Oddball" is Alive and Well in Panzer Leader
(Tom Cundiff) - This is an article about a series
of new counters for PANZER LEADER. Some have been
previously presented in other magazines but Tom
brings them all together in one article. The
article includes the counters themselves (on the
same counter sheets as those in the previous
article) and Unit Function Charts for them.
Volume 1, #3 - Panzer Leader in the Pacific: 5 Scenarios From the
Pacific Islands Campaigns (Gilbert Garza) - This
is a series of five scenarios from the Pacific
using the PANZER LEADER game. The article includes
the five scenarios, two counter sheets, and Unit

various weapons systems and units that the new
counters from previous article represent.
Volume 1, #3 - Rare Japanese Tanks: Additions to "Pacific" Panzer
Leader (Tom Cundiff) - This article gives the
brief history of several rare Japanese tanks.
These tanks were given counters which are on the
counter sheet for the Pacific scenarios previously
described but are not in any of the scenarios.
They are just included for DYO purposes.
Volume 2, #1 - Axis Minors in Panzerblitz/Panzer Leader - Italy
First (Byron Henderson) - This article introduced
new Italian counters into both game systems. The
article starts by using the format used in "The
Pieces of Panzerblitz" from the GENERAL Vol.11,
#4, but then switches over to Unit Composition
Tables for the various level of Italian units and
finishes off with a Unit Function Chart. There is
a counter set for these new Italian units
available for purchase from the OLD SOLDIERS
magazine.
Volume 2, #2 - Axis Minors in Panzerblitz/Panzer Leader - Hungary
(Byron Henderson) - This article introduced new
Hungarian counters into both game systems. The
article uses the same format as the previous
entry. Again there is a counter set for these new
Hungarian units available for purchase from the
OLD SOLDIERS magazine.
Volume 2, #2 - Jump Aircraft and Paratroops in Panzer Leader
(Tom Cundiff) - This article basically improves on
the "Para-Leader" article from way back in the
GENERAL Vol.20, #2. The article describes the
different transport and glider aircraft used by
the different powers and also brings in the
Russians under the "Para-Leader" rules. There is a
big six counter sheet set for these units
available for purchase from the OLD SOLDIERS
magazine. These included regular and breakdown
units and the individual transport and glider
counters for the Germans, Americans, British,
Russian, Italian, and Japanese.
Volume 2, #2 - Axis Minors in Panzerblitz/Panzer Leader - Romania
(Byron Henderson) - This article introduced new
Romanian counters into both game systems. The
article uses the same format as the previous two
articles in this series. As usual there is a
counter set for these new Romanian units available
for purchase from the OLD SOLDIERS magazine.
Volume 2, #3 - What if?... Additional Italian AFVs for
Panzerblitz & Panzer Leader (Byron Henderson) -
This article introduces six rare Italian AFVs that
probably existed only in prototype and never saw
combat. These counters were available on a counter
sheet for that issue that was available for
purchase.
Volume 2, #4 - Panzer Leader 1940 Master Unit Function Charts
(Alan R. Arvold) - This are master unit charts for
all the units used in Panzer Leader 1940. It
supersedes the one that came in the original
article back in the General Vol.15, #2.
Volume 5, #2 - The Paths of Rommel: Revised Scenarios for Panzer
Leader (Alan R. Arvold) - This article completely
revamps the six scenarios that were originally
presented back in the GENERAL Vol.22, #3. It

makes more playable.

Scenario (Mike Haines and Richard Williams) - This
is a scenario involving the British 51st Highland
Infantry Division versus the German 7th Panzer
Division during the France 1940 Campaign.
IMAGINATIVE STRATEGIST Website
The IMAGINATIVE STRATEGIST is a website devoted to PANZERBLITZ
and PANZER LEADER. It was created and is run by Ward McBurney.
This website is now one of the main websites for this game
system. On it there are a host of downloadable items. These
include countersheets of all the counters, both those in the
games and those variant counters that were published in the
GENERAL and BOARDGAMER magazines, brand new variant mapboards for
both games, and a series of articles on the Dunnigan System, the
system originally used to determine the counter values for the
counters in the game. This series of articles, which will be
listed below, has caused a lot of controversy as they invalidated
a lot of previously published variant counters because their
counter values were wrongly formulated by using incorrect
precepts. Aside from that, the most important fact about the
IMAGINATIVE STRATEGIST is that it is safely located up in Canada
where Multi-Man Publishing can not shut it down.
Artillery Factors in the Dunnigan System (Alan R. Arvold) - This
article describes how the artillery counter factors were
formulated.
Mortar Factors in the Dunnigan System (Alan R. Arvold) - This
article describes how the mortar counter factors were formulated.
Rocket Artillery Factors in the Dunnigan System (Alan R. Arvold)
- This article describes how the rocket artillery counter factors
were formulated.
Infantry Factors in the Dunnigan System (Alan R. Arvold) - This
article describes how the infantry counter factors were
formulated. Note that this article has caused the most
controversy.
Cavalry Factors in the Dunnigan System (Alan R. Arvold) - This
article describes how the cavalry counter factors were
formulated.
Anti-Armor Attack and Range Factors in the Dunnigan System
(Alan R. Arvold) - This article describes how the A Class attack
and range factors were formulated for the various types of
vehicular and artillery counters in both Panzerblitz and Panzer
Leader.
Vehicular Defense and Movement Factors in the Dunnigan System
(Alan R. Arvold) - This article describes how the defense and
movement factors for the various vehicular counters were
formulated.
Miscellaneous Units in the Dunnigan System (Alan R. Arvold) -
This article goes into the formulation of the counter factors of
various units that were not included in any of the articles
listed above.
The Combat Results Table in the Dunnigan System (Alan R. Arvold)
- This article goes into the theory behind the results on the
combat results table.
Effects of New Terrain on New Panzerblitz Boards (Alan R. Arvold)
- This article describes the effects of the new terrain features
that have been introduced in the new series of mapboards that
have been posted on the IMAGINATIVE STRATEGIST. Note that these
rules stay within the original form and structure of the rules of
the games and seek to expand them, not change them into
something else as most variants do. Also note that although these
were originally for the new Panzerblitz board, they apply equally
well to the new Panzer Leader boards that are also posted on the
website.
Obstacles and Elevation (Modified) (Alan R. Arvold) - This
article is essentially a rewrite of the Obstacle and Elevation
Rules in the original game rules in order to incorporate the new
Level 2 Slope and Hilltop hexes that have been introduced in the
new mapboards. Included with this article in a separate posting
is a new Target Elevation Table which incorporates these new
elevation levels.
An Informal History of the Development of Panzerblitz
(Alan R. Arvold) - This is an informal history of the development
of Panzerblitz from 1968 to the mid-Seventies. It is listed here
because Panzer Leader's developmental history is also described,
being linked to the parent game Panzerblitz.
PANZERBLITZ HOMEPAGE Website
This is the original website devoted to the PANZERBLITZ family
of games. It was readily identifiable by its orange backround on
the website. It was started back in 1997 and is still online
today, although it has not been updated since 2003. Once a very
active website, it lied dormant with only an occasional entry on
its forum for several years, then in 2006 its webmaster moved the
sight to another webpage. It has various scenarios, articles, and
variant counters, most of which can not now be brought up due to
the link between the entry on the website and the original
author's website being broken. Still of one can contact the
original author, one may still be able to get the item in
question.
Situation 21: Hammelburg (J.M. Renaud) - This is a scenario about
the Hammelburg raid. It is smaller and quite different from the
one in the GENERAL Vol.31, #6.
Situation 22: Division Clauswitz (J.M. Renaud) - This is a
scenario about a battle near Magdeburg, Germany in April of 1945.
Situation 23: Operation Blockbuster (J.M. Renaud) - This is a
scenario about a battle near the town of Xanten, west of the
Rhine River, in February of 1945.
Western Tunisia (Gilbert Garza) - This is a desert war scenario
that occurred in November of 1942.
Drive to the Channel (Gilbert Garza) - This is a PANZER LEADER
1940 scenario that occurred on 20 May 1940.
Steppe Leader: Battles in Manchuria, 1938-39 (Brian R. Train) -
This is a set of seven scenarios dealing with the fighting in
Manchuria between the Russians and the Japanese before the start
of World War II. The set includes the scenarios, special rules,
and a counter sheet of variant counters that it shares with the
next entry. Although this set uses components from the
PANZERBLITZ, PANZER LEADER, and ARAB-ISRAELI WARS games, it is
primarily classified as a PANZER LEADER variant.
Desert Leader: Battles in North Africa, 1940-43 (Brian R. Train)
- This is a set of 13 scenarios dealing the fighting in North
Africa. This set includes the scenarios, special rules and
counter sheet of variant counters that it shares with the
previous entry. Although this set uses components from both the
PANZER LEADER and ARAB-ISRAELI WARS games, it is primarily
classified as a PANZER LEADER variant.
MOVES Magazine
MOVES magazine was originally published by SPI from 1972 to
1982. It lasted sixty issues. It was then picked up by TSR in
1982 when they took over SPI and it became a section within the
S&T magazines. 3W then bought S&T from TSR in 1987 and the MOVES
section was moved to their WARGAMER magazine. And finally it was
picked up by Decision Games in 1991 and it became a magazine
again. Forty-eight more issues were published before it was
finally terminated in 2002. It featured games reviews, variants,
and scenarios primarily from SPI games but under 3W and Decision
Games it featured games from all companies.
Moves #24 - Comparitive Evaluation: Panzer Leader & Panzer '44
(Phil Kosnett) - A comparative analysis of the two
games, SPI's Panzer '44 and Avalon Hill's Panzer
Leader.
Moves #78 - Patton's War: Rules and Scenarios for Panzerblitz and
Panzer Leader (Ton Cundiff) - Twelve new scenarios
dealing with a hypothetical post World War II
conflict between the Western Allies and the Russians.
FIRE & MOVEMENT Magazine
FIRE & MOVEMENT (F&M) was originally founded by Roger B.
MacGowan back in 1976. Since then it has changed ownership four
times, finally culminating with its purchase by Decision Games
back in 1989, who owns it to this day. Essentially a game review
type magazine, it has occasionally published some variants and
scenarios as well.
F&M #4 - Panzer Leader '77 (Roy Easton) - This is a PANZER LEADER
variant that includes PANZERBLITZ pieces as well.
F&M #6 - Game Notes: AH's PANZERLEADER, A British View
(Geoff Barnard) - A commentary about PANZER LEADER from
a British viewpoint.
F&M #10 - Scenario HQ (Bill Farone) - A magazine section which
dealt with new scenarios that came out for various
tactical games. It included a new scenario for PANZER
LEADER between the Poles and the Germans at Cassino in
Italy in 1944.
F&M #53 - 20 Years Later and 10 Years after Squad Leader: A
History of Tactical Games (Roger B. MacGowan) - A
history of the development and evolution of tactical
armored warfare games, in which PANZER LEADER played an
important early part.
F&M #65 - World War II F&M Anthology: Chapter 4; The Western
Front (Jeff Petraska) - Part of F&M's great anthology
of WWII games. PANZER LEADER is featured in a quick
review.
PHOENIX Magazine
Phoenix was published by SimPubs Ltd., a British subsidiary of
SPI, and was distributed in Great Britain. It could rightly be
considered to be the British version of MOVES magazine. It lasted
six years, from 1976 to 1982, and had 36 issues. I have a few
issues of this magazine. The old back issues of the magazine are
rarely seen here in the United States although they are still
available through some British sources.
Phoenix #21 - Banging Your Head on the Belgium Border:
Panzerblitz (AH) (Francis Comerford) - Although it
is listed as a PANZERBLITZ article, it is really a
review of PANZER LEADER Situation #13.
World War II Tactical Games Review (Geoff Barnard)
- A review of WWII armored warfare tactical games
which included PANZER LEADER.
VAIPA QUARTERLY Magazine
VAIPA QUARTERLY is a privately produced magazine that is sold
directly from the owner Micheal Sanchez. VAIPA stands for
Variants Artificial Intelligance Pb(e)m Aids. It was later
renamed the VAIPA EXPRESS. This magazine has produced variants
for several different games. I have only seen it sold on Ebay, so
I guess that is how the owner distributes it (to the highest
bidder).
VAIPA #4 - Waffen SS (No author listed) - This is a variant that
covers selected Waffen SS battles in PANZER LEADER. It
contains a mounted set of variant SS counters for each
of the German units in the game, a set of eight
scenarios, and special rules for certain units and
scenarios. Although the variant is designed for PANZER
LEADER, the counters can be used in PANZERBLITZ as
well.
COUNTER MOVES Ltd.
COUNTER MOVES Ltd. is a name of a company (of probably one or
two people) which is among a group of individuals and companies
that have been selling reprints of PANZERBLITZ/PANZER LEADER
articles, from the GENERAL magazine, on Ebay over the past few
years. In a way these individuals are doing a great service to
gamers as copies of the GENERAL are getting harder and more
expensive to find. But that is not why they are included in this
list. COUNTER MOVES also publishes a series of variants
containing scenarios from magazines that are still in
publication. To avoid out right accusations of plagiarism, they
make minor changes to the articles and scenarios. A lot of other
authors have done this, myself included, but at least we have the
decency to acknowledge the original authors of our source
materials. COUNTER MOVES, on the other hand, puts out the
material as if they are the original authors (by using the
company name) and treats the rest of the world as if they are the
plagiarists. In recent releases and reprints of their older
products, they have switched their tactics somewhat by listing
the original article or the magazine it came out of as a
reference source, in a vain attempt to avoid charges of
plagiarism. Since some of the following variants are taken
directly from the BOARDGAMER Special PANZER LEADER Issue, one can
see why I am personally concerned about this. It would not be so
bad if they would directly acknowledge the original authors of
their source material, but no, they go right on with what they
are doing, confident in the fact that everyone in the wargaming
industry is so poor that they will never be sued and brought to
court. Seems to have worked as their only redeeming feature is
the fact that they have never been successfully shut down by
Multi-Man Publishing.
France 1940: The German Blitzkrieg in the West (No author listed)
- This is a reprint of the PANZER LEADER 1940 article from the
GENERAL Vol.15, #2. The entire original article was reprinted,
with the usual changes in occasional sentences. Instead of making
their own scenario cards, they just photocopied the original
scenarios from the magazine. The counters are shoddy and badly
die cut. Avoid this one.
The Paths of Rommel, 1940 (No author listed) - This is a reprint
of the Paths of Rommel article in the GENERAL Vol.22, #3. Again
like the previous entry, they photocopied the scenarios directly
from the magazine. They made a few changes to the counters but
their quality is still low. Feed this one to the fire.
Para-Leader (No author listed) - This is reprint of the Para-
Leader article from the GENERAL Vol.20, #2. They must have been
really lazy when they made this one as it is nothing more than
photocopied pages of the entire article, not just the scenarios.
They even left the original author's name on the article. As
usual the counters are sub-standard. Trash this one.
For King and Country (No author listed) - This is a reprint of my
article "New British Scenarios for Panzer Leader" from the
BOARDGAMER Special PANZER LEADER Issue. It has ten scenarios,
three from my article, six more from various other articles in
that same issue, and a photocopy of the Dieppe scenario from the
GENERAL Vol.21, #3. Again the counters are sub-standard. Throw
this one away.
GI: Home By The Holidays (No author listed) - This is a
collection of nine various scenarios out of the BOARDGAMER
Special PANZER LEADER Issue that deal with the fall battles of
1944. They are all US versus German scenarios. For once the
article was original, not a blatant copy, though the scenarios
were obviously copied. As usual the counters are shoddy. Burn
this one.
Panzer Busters (No Author listed) - This is a blatant plagiarism
of Carl Schwarmburger's article "Panzer Hunters" from the GENERAL
Vol.28, #3. As usual there are several word changes and the
counters are sub-standard. Avoid this one like the plague.
PANZERFAUST/CAMPAIGN Magazine
PANZERFAUST was created by Don Greenwood back in 1967. It was
basically a standard game review, variant, scenario, and analysis
article type magazine. It did occasionally have some historical
articles too. In 1972, Don Lowery of Guidon Games assumed control
of the magazine when Greenwood moved on to Avalon Hill. In 1976
the magazine name was changed to PANZERFAUST & CAMPAIGN and in
the following year it was changed again to just CAMPAIGN, the
name it kept until the end. The magazine lasted until early 1983
when Guidon Games went out of business. It had a total of 111
issues, plus several specials. As I have all issues from #41 on
forward, I believe that I have all of the PANZER LEADER articles
that were printed in the magazine.
Panzerfaust #66 - Six From A.H. (Don Lowery) - A review of six
recently released or re-released games of which
PANZER LEADER was one of them.
Panzerfaust &
Campaign #72 - Defending Omaha Beach (Jeffery Paul Jones) - A
strategy article on German play in Situation #2.
Panzerfaust &
Campaign #74 - A Panzerblitz Ramble (Herschel M. Sarnoff) - A
look at the tactical games that trace their
evolutionary roots to PANZERBLITZ. PANZER LEADER
was one of them.
Panzerfaust &
Campaing #76 - Conquering the Reichswald (Jeffery Paul Jones) -
A strategy article on Allied play in Situation
#6.
Panzerfaust &
Campaign #77 - From Panzer Leader to Panzer '44 and Back Again
(Patrick A. Flory) - Another comparative analysis
of both PANZER LEADER and PANZER '44.
Campaign #83 - Panzer Leader: Encirclement of Nancy
(Jeffery Paul Jones) - A strategy article on
German play in Situation #7.
Campaign #85 - On the Path of the Rational Tactical Wargame
(Lorring Bird) - Another short look at tactical
games that trace their roots back to PANZERBLITZ,
PANZER LEADER being one of them.
JAGDPANTHER/BATTLEFIELD Magazine
JAGDPANTHER was the house magazine of Jagdpanther
Publications, which was founded by Steven V. Cole back in 1973.
The magazine was basically a MOVES type magazine with variants,
scenarios, and strategy tips for different games, but it also had
a game in every issue. Besides the magazine, the company also put
out newletters and produced a number of games and game
accessories. JAGDPANTHER lasted from 1973 to 1976 for a total of
fifteen issues, the last one being renamed BATTLEFIELD. The first
four issues of JAGDPANTHER placed a heavy emphasis on PANZERBLITZ
in its article coverage and are extremely rare to find. However,
some articles from the first four issues have been rediscovered
in recent years and have been posted on the Internet. I have the
entire set of all fifteen issues, although I am missing the games
out of the first four issues.
Jagdpanther #10 - Panzersot (Pete Sausey) - A rather humorous
PANZER LEADER scenario where converging Western
Allied and Russian forces battle the German
defenders (and each other) for control of a
winery in central Germany in the last days of
the war.
Blitzleader (Jahn Barry) - An article
integrating PANZER LEADER rules into
PANZERBLITZ in order to make them compatible.
Jagdpanther #12 - Thoughts on Panzer Leader (Steven V. Cole) - A
commentary on the game PANZER LEADER along with
some suggestions to improve it.
Jagdpanther #14 - Whiskey Station (Joseph Kibera) - A scenario
about a battle occurring in Italy in 1944.
OUTPOST Magazine
OUTPOSTS was the house magazine of the Conflict Simulation
Society (CSS). It was basically a MOVES type magazine, featuring
variants, new scenarios, and strategy articles. It covered games
from all companies at the time, but the majority of the articles
covered SPI and AH games. The CSS was a national gaming club that
never quite achieved the fame of the bigger ones such as AHIKS,
SPARTAN INTERNATIONAL, and the INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF
WARGAMERS. OUTPOSTS lasted from 1974 to 1978 when the CSS broke
up, for a total of twelve issues.
Outposts #6 - PBM: Panzer Leader (Robert Cross) - An article on a
PBM system for PANZER LEADER. Included a PBM mini-
sheet in that issue.
Additional Panzerblitz Scenarios (Bill Scott) -
Three new scenarios which used the counters from
the Panzerblitz Units Series in the magazine. One
of the scenarios occurred in France 1940 which was
later converted to the proper PANZER LEADER
standards in the BOARDGAMER Special PANZER LEADER
issue.
Outposts #10 - Battle for France (Mark Matuschak) - The first in
a series of articles introducing new scenarios for
France 1940. Again the scenarios used units from
the Panzerblitz Units Series in the magazine
although they did use the PANZER LEADER game. This
article had two scenarios which were later
converted to proper PANZER LEADER standards in the
BOARDGAMER Special PANZER LEADER issue.
Outposts #12 - Battle for France Part II (Mark Matuschak) - The
second part in the above mentioned series. This
article introduce two more scenarios which were
later converted to proper PANZER LEADER standards.
There were supposed to be more articles in this
series but the magazine folded before they could
be published.
Panzer Leader Extras (Victor Peck) - These were
two scenarios that were conversions of like
scenarios in other tactical armored warfare games
of the time to PANZER LEADER standards. They were
not done very well.
AMERICAN WARGAMER Newsletter
AMERICAN WARGAMER (AW) was the house newsletter for the
American Wargaming Association, a Northeastern based organization
that strove to become a national club to replace the
International Federation of Wargamers, which broke up in early
1973. Although they tried hard, their membership never got above
200 member nationally. Was founded in 1973 and lasted until the
mid-Eighties when they merged with another organization to form
the Strategy Gaming Society. The newsletter mostly dealt with
club and hobby news, with a strong emphasis on game reviews.
However, it also published scenarios, variants, and game strategy
articles was well. At the time of the merger, the AMERICAN
WARGAMER's name was changed to the STRATEGIST.
AW Vol.2, #8 - Game Review: Panzer Leader (George Phllies) -
An extensive review of the game.
AW Vol.2, #12 - Panzer Leader Revisited (George Phillies) - A
continuation of the previous review with some
strategy tips for the first three situations.
AW Vol.8, #8 - Panzer Leader: Static Cherbourg for AWA Readers
(Tom Scholle) - A scenario involving the battle of
Cherbourg in June 1945.
AW Vol.10, #6 - Game Variants (Mike Brines) - A pair of scenarios
involving actions during the Battle of the Bulge.
STRATEGIST Newsletter
The STRATEGIST is the house organ of the Strategy Gaming
Society (SGS). Although it started out as just a newsletter with
club and gaming news, it quickly developed into another MOVES
type periodical where game reviews, variants, and scenarios were
printed. In fact, the STRATEGIST acquired the reputation of
printing articles that were rejected by the more professional
wargame magazines in the hobby. It was first published in the
1973 as the AMERICAN WARGAMER and changed its name in the mid-
Eighties after a merger between the AWA and another organization
formed the SGS. It seemed to have ceased publication in early
2004 when the SGS was rumored to have dissolved. However this
proved to be false as the SGS is still in operation aster a short
civil war among its top leadership. One would think that with
such longevity, there would be a lot of PANZER LEADER articles
printed in them over the years, and in truth there probably were.
However, the STRATEGIST has had a few problems that precluded
locating them all. One is that there was, and still is, no master
article index for the newsletter. This was due to the fact that
there have been many editors to the newsletter over the years,
each one lasting from one to three years on the job. Most of
these editors never passed on their work to their successors,
many even took the spare back issues with them when they left.
Another problem was that no one seemed interested in even trying
to assemble a master article index for the newsletter. (Some
attribute this to apathy within the organization.) Still another
problem was that many copies of the PANZER LEADER articles from
the STRATEGIST that have been passed around among various gaming
circles do not have the issue number printed on the pages (unless
someone happened to write it in the margin). This makes it very
hard to list them in chronological order. What makes this harder
is that many of the longer articles were spread out among several
different issues, some as many as seven. The following articles
are the ones that I have in my possession.
The Para-Leader Counter Mine (Richard Gutenkunst) - A variant
rule to used with the Para-Leader rules in the GENERAL Vol.20,
#2.
More Panzer Leader "Italian Style"! (No author listed) - Two
scenarios from the Normandy Campaign. One had been previously
published in the AMERICAN WARGAMER.
Panzer Leader Scenario 1 Quicknotes (Ryan Schultz) - A strategy
article on Situation #1 in the game.
Just Panzers (Ryan Schultz) - This article appeared in issue
#207. Another set of rules combining PANZERBLITZ and PANZER
LEADER.
Panzer Leader "1990" (Jeff Nelson) - This article appeared in two
part, in issues #209 and #210. This variant used the PANZER
LEADER rules (with a little help from ARAB-IRAELI WARS) to create
a modern version. Came with five scenarios, special rules, and
variant counters.
OK PL/PB Players GO FOR IT (Author Unknown) - This is a variant
article featuring one of the big Mega-scenarios out of Italy. It
deals with battles from the Korean War. It included variant
counters for newer armored vehicles of the time and new counters
for the Koreans (North and South) and the Red Chinese.
Panzer Leader: Ardennes 1944; Turning Point (Ferro Gianpietro) -
Another of the big mega-scenarios out of Italy. This one appeared
in issue #262. This scenario dealt with the battle of Celles.
Panzer Leader: Report of an Attempt; Hanut (Enrico Tagliazucchi &
Sergio Cuoghi) - Still yet another one of the big scenarios from
Italy. This one appeared in issued #265. This scenario dealt with
the battle of Hanut in France 1940.
The Macro-Game: Stonne; 15 May 1940 (Enrico Tagliazucchi & Sergio
Cuoghi) - Again still yet another one of the big scenarios from
Italy. This one appeared in issue #268. This one dealt with the
battle of Stonne in France 1940.
Try This One for the Heck of It (Francis Spivak) - This was a
small British-German scenario occurring in the North African
Desert in 1941.
Remagen Bridge (No author listed) - This was a better version of
the battle of the Remagen Bridge than the one in the game. Even
came with a more accurate map of the actual terrain.
The Battle of Cassino (Sergio Cuoghi) - This was a four scenario
series dealing with the four battles for Cassino.
Towards the End: Italy 1945 (Sergio Cuoghi) - Still yet another
one of the big scenarios out of Italy. This one dealt with the
battle of Argenta in April 1945. Had a lot of special rules and
counters. Was spread out over three issues.
Operation Avalanche: The Battle for Salerno (Sergio Cuoghi) -
This was a series of eight scenarios dealing with the battle for
Salerno in September 1943. Was spread out over five issues.
PL Fans: An Italian Import (Ferro Giapietro) - This was a set of
two scenarios with were Panzer Leader conversions of the same
scenarios in PANZER '44.
Panzer Leader Scenario Four Quicknotes (Ryan Schultz) - This was
a strategy article for Situation #4 in the game.
Artillery in Panzerblitz/Panzer Leader (Byron Henderson) - This
article was published in issue #300 and provided variant
artillery counters for both games using the system of determining
HE Attack Factors in the game ARAB-ISRAELI WARS, the third game
in the PANZERBLITZ series of games. Counters were printed with
the article and were also available from the SGS for a while.
MISCELLANEOUS
This category includes articles whose magazine source can not
be positively identified. It also includes independent articles
on the Internet from such websites such as Grognard.com, a vast
repository of articles for all games.
Panzer Leader Alternate Rules Set (Armando P. Signore) - An
article of 26 variant rules, plus new tables, designed to improve
the game.
Panzer Leader Analysis (Milton D. Schroeder) - This was supposed
to be an in depth analysis of all twenty scenarios in the game.
However, Mr. Schroeder never finished it, actually doing only 13
scenarios (1-8, 11, 14, 16, 18, and 20). Still these are a very
good analysis of these scenarios from the point of view from both
sides.
Panzer Leader '77: NATO vs Warsaw Pact (Marco Valerio Bonelli) -
This is a massive variant, much like the "Panzer Leader 1990"
article listed in the STRATEGIST section. As usual the rules are
a blend of PANZER LEADER and ARAB-ISRAELI WARS. There are three
scenarios and ton of variant counters.
Panzer Leader Version 1.1 (Steven Busey) - This was a series of
Second Edition rules for PANZER LEADER. Each year Mr. Busey would
continue to improve on them and put out a new set. However in
2006, Mr. Busey announced that he is giving up this rewrite of
the rules because the end result was a game that was vastly
different from PANZER LEADER. Still the rules are a good read for
the innovative ideas they put forth.
House Rules for Panzer Leader (Steven Busey) - An article
containing a list of house rules developed and used by the
author. Certaining worth reading.
Battle of Aachen (Doug Swanson) - This is a mega-scenario found
on Grognard.com. The map iself comprises 60 sections and there is
an extensive order of battle for both sides. A must have for
those who love mega-scenarios.
Panzer Leader Version 1.2 (James Connolly) - This is Mr.
Connolly's version of Mr. Busey's previous rewrite of the PANZER
LEADER rules and tables. While certainly the best rewrite of the
rules so far, Mr. Busey's admonition is quite correct in that it
in effect makes it into another different game.
Reluctant Legions-Italy at War, 1940-43 (Thomas H. Williams) -
This is a short article about Italy in the Second World War. It
includes eight scenarios and two variant countersheets. Half of
the scenarios occur in Russia and the other half occur in North
Africa. This makes this variant applicable in both Panzerblitz
and Panzer Leader.
Panzer Leader-Guadalcanal (Thomas H. Williams and LTCDR Roger N.
Thomas, USN (Ret))- This is a medium size article about the
fighting on Guadalcanal in the latter part of 1942. This variant
adapts the Panzer Leader rules to jungle fighting. It includes
ten scenarios, one and a half variant countersheets, and four
variant mapsheets. A real prize to have.
1948-Stalin Moves West: A Panzerblitz/Panzer Leader Variant
(Thomas H. Williams) - This is a short article dealing with a
hypothetical Western Allies/Soviet war in 1948 in Germany. It
includes eight scenarios and a variant countersheet. Although
some of the scenarios use the mapboards from both Panzerblitz and
Panzer Leader, most of them require the use of variant mapboards
that are available for sale from Patrick Storto. This is a
Panzerblitz/Panzer Leader variant.
CONCLUSION
This concludes this index of PANZER LEADER articles. Are these
all of the articles that were ever printed or posted? Of course
not. There are still a lot of articles out there waiting to be
found, not only in various obscure club magazines, but also on
the Internet as well.
I am putting out the call to all gamers who may have copies of
these missing articles. If you want to see them included in this
index, or have corrections to the entries in this article
(including issue numbers for those entries without them), please
contact me at the following email address:
However be warned, I will only post new entries into this
index if I have copies of the articles in question. These can ba
hard copies sent to me by mail or scans of them sent via email.
The reason for this is because I have already had too many would
be plagiarists tell me about an article that they have "written"
and was published, not knowing that I already had a copy of the
article in question with the real author's name in my possession.
With that being said, let's make this index complete with the
rest of the missing articles.
