FT S9 Cowboys and Indians After Action Report (AAR) Advanced Squad Leader scenario

"My top priority was to prevent the KMC from cutting off my lines of retreat up through the top side of the map." Jackson Kwan, in the Hong Kong Wargamer blog, brings us an intense Korean War AAR from an Advanced Squad Leader scenario. See why he finds this scenario to be "...small and quick enough to not be tedious for the South Koreans and to be nail-bitingly exciting at some points for the North Koreans."

VASL Review- “ASL over the internet!”

Don Maddox reviews the VASSAL Module for Avalon Hill’s Advanced Squad Leader (ASL) commonly referred to as VASL in this review from 2004. Vassal is a game engine for building and playing online adaptations of board games and card games. A growing list of game Modules is available at the web site and at web sites for some game publishers. Players can play solitaire off-line, play live on the Internet or play by email. Vassal runs on all platforms, and is free, open-source software. Don covers installation, the user interface for game play, game features including player aids, and how to find and play an opponent over the internet. He closes with a quick VASSAL overview for other games. Although VASL has received many updates with new features and corrections, back in 2004 it was good enough to rate an 8.9 out of 10 in this review. “…VASL is the single best wargamer utility this author has ever seen…(and)… We're proud to award VASL/VASSAL with a Warfare HQ Award of Excellence.”

VASL - Play Advanced Squad Leader over the internet!

VASL is a computerized interface for playing ASL over the Internet. It does not replace the need to own the boardgame, but it does allow any two players to connect and play each other live over the Internet. Play by email or connect to the online server, where you can view other games being played, share information, chat, and compete in online tournaments. (Latest version 6.6.2, updated on 4/26/2021)

Our Saturday Game - ASL Scenario J176 - Deadly Assumptions

Grumble Jones ASL Blog brings us their replay of Advanced Squad Leader. ASL Scenario J176 - Deadly Assumption from ASL Journal 11. This is a late war scenario set in Germany, 1945 and has a unique situation. It's involves simultaneous setup. With plentiful panzerfausts and no infantry support at start, the American tanks should be very vulnerable as they were in the historical version. Historically, the tankers of the 8th Armor found themselves in a fight for their lives in the city streets of Rheinberg.

Hong Kong Wargamer: Review and Analysis

An article originally penned by Eoin Corrigan and reprinted on the Hong Kong Wargamer blog. The title of the article is 'Advanced Squad Leader is the Best Wargame Ever Published'... and he makes a pretty good attempt at scientifically proving it! In addition to the game-specific info, he makes some pretty good observations about the hobby in general. A long, but worthwhile, read.
